1. WELCOME TO MEETING
The Chairman, Chris Lazou, welcomed everyone to the meeting and
expressed disappointment that no speaker could be found. This
is partly due to the secretarial difficulties the group is
experiencing.
As we were not able to get a speaker the meeting proceeded with
the afternoon FSG business agenda.
2. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE
The following sent their apologies: Ted Golton, Miles Ellis,
David Harris.
3. MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 20.5.93[was 3.9.92 in distributed minutes]
The minutes were accepted as a true record with a number of
minor corrections.
1..... apologies from John Young
2..... item 5.. The Chairman welcomed every one ...
3..... item 6.. to pay their £10 membership fee by_a deadline..
4..... item 9.. acom.. should read alphacomp...
5..... item 11.. comit.. should read commit.
4. MATTERS ARISING
4.1 David Harris has accepted the secretarial offer, but for
work reasons he is unable to make Thursday meetings. A
decision was made to move the next meeting to Tuesday 23rd
November to enable David to attend.
4.2 No action was taken about the Cambridge Intelligence offer
to pay for an advertisement of FSG in their directory. The
dead line has now passed.
5. TALKS FOR FUTURE MEETINGS
After some discussion the following suggestions were made.
5.1 High Performance Fortran (HPF)
5.2 ESPRIT/Rubbia Report, SERC etc. type of initiatives.
5.3 Teaching of Fortran - to what extent this is happening in
Universities and where does it fit in their courses.
5.4 Cray Fortran 90 and HPF for their Parallel system.
5.5 NAG or Salford Fortran 90.
Other suggestions are welcomed and should be send to Chris
Lazou or any of the other FSG Officers.
6. FORTRAN NEWSLETTER & ARTICLES
6.1 John Bruce offered to help with the printing of a Fortran
newsletter as part of his interest in Fortran FSG (he was
for many years Scottish FSG representative), and also as
part of his new role as BCS regional Officer in Scotland.
The decision was for John to talk to Miles Ellis. The
meeting felt that there were insufficient resources
available for a regular high quality newsletter, (which
people would be prepared to pay for), at present. The
alternative of inserting articles in trade magazines and
the revamped BCS bulletin should be pursued more actively.
7. AOB
Chris Lazou reported that the date for the one day HPF
meeting has not been fixed yet. The latest plan is for
Terry Mawby from RAL to come up with a proposal to have it
at RAL. The meeting is expected to be held next spring.
BCSFSG will be involved.
8. DATE & PLACE OF NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 23rd November
1993, at 7 Mansfield Mews, with Coffee at 10.30 am. Cray
Research will be asked to present their High Performance
Fortran and their new Massively Parallel Machine, the Cray
T3D/MPP. We need a large attendance.
